If you could have one superpower, what would you choose? As it turns out, both Bill Gates and Warren Buffet have answered the question before – and they came up with the same answer. That answer, however, might surprise you. Their superpower of choice? Being a super-fast reader.
No matter what stage of your career or what your professional aspirations, being a lifelong learner is integral to your success. Reading is one of the most important ways to learn, and cultivating a habit of reading is something that will help you no matter where your life takes you.
A great way to keep up with reading is to frequent business blogs, particularly those related to your industry. While they're no substitute for in-depth books, blogs can help keep you informed of current events and news in your industry, and they can also provide helpful advice and insights that will improve your daily working life. It's important not to let blog reading take the place of a habit of reading books, but I find that keeping up with a few blogs I like and trust helps me keep myself current and keep the right mindset during my day-to-day work.
One great strategy for ensuring you protect your reading habit is subscription. Many business blogs – like this one – have an option for you to subscribe to the blog, which means you'll get a notification whenever the blog publishes an article. I try to keep a subscription to 4 or 5 blogs I find valuable at any one time. This gives me a healthy supply of reading material, which often helps me be a better leader or manager by providing helpful insights or industry updates.
If you're interested in blogging, staying up-to-date on other blogs and business trends can be helpful to you so that you're able to get involved with popular topics and conversations. I use Dentistry Leaders, my personal blog, to share insights, lessons and thoughts I've gained during my 35+ year career in dentistry and over the course of building Heartland Dental, which is now the largest dental support organization in the world. If you're interested, try subscribing to Dentistry Leaders today. You may like what you learn.
