As a business owner, manager, or HR professional, hiring is one of the most important elements of your business. Hiring is the first step in building an incredible team, and a good hire can inject energy, innovation and enthusiasm to your organization, helping to propel your business to new heights. A bad hiring decision, however, can severely hamper your growth, and you may feel the effects for years to come. Needless to say, hiring decisions are critical for the health of your business – so here are some tips you can use to improve your own hiring process. 

Start Early

Rushing the hiring process is an easy way to make a quick, poorly thought out decision and land you with a bad hire – something that will stunt your business for a long time to come. To prevent this, give yourself more time than you think you need to find a candidate. Starting the process early gives you the time to do it slowly and do it right – something you'll thank yourself for down the road.

Use Quantifiable Metrics to Limit Bias

All humans are inherently biased, so when making a hiring decision, it's important to implement systems to limit your own bias. Try creating a scorecard that marks candidates on simple, quantifiable elements like continuing education, years of experience, or trainings and certifications. This can help to reduce bias in the early stages of the hiring process and help you find a candidate who's truly qualified for the job. 

Don't Be Afraid of Testing

The conventional format of interviewing candidates may be standard procedure, but it's far from the only – or the most effective – way to select a new hire. Don't be afraid of testing candidates through things like personality tests, practicing clinical work, or even written assessments. It may feel unconventional, but it's a great way to see what the candidate is really capable of and find a competent, qualified new hire.

It's Better to Hire Correctly Than Hire Fast
